Gerard Ghislain, the perfumer behind 1899, follows the intrepid Hemingway on his journeys around the world, starting with the bracing sunny citrus notes of Mediterranean countries like Spain and Italy, through the sophisticated spicy floral heart reminiscent of Parisian salons and ending in the Cuban bars, their warm, dark atmosphere rendered with the help of vetiver and amber. It’s a twisted, exotic olfactory travel as lively and exciting as its inspiration source, with the scent of cinamon trailing softly through all the perfume stages. Warm, jovial, vibrant, friendly this is a scent for a social, communicative person, with an extrovert personality: the image of Hemingway in his best moments.

There are many perfumes that have a story to tell, they can awaken memories, recall pictures to the mind’s eye and evoke emotions. Gérald Ghislain, the man behind Histoires de Parfums, wants more: he wants to write history, namely perfume history – with perfumes which not only tell stories, but also tell of history. Inspiration for Ghislain’s scents are the outstanding personalities of their time, influential characters from bygone eras; or even whole periods themselves, eras that influenced history with their zeitgeist.

“Each fragrance is a wonderful memory and behind each memory lies a wonderful story,” says Ghislain, the storyteller, whose current occupation was a long-cherished dream. The bon viveur and adventurer, born in the South of France and brought up in Morocco had already practiced all sorts of other professions when he eventually followed his dream to study at the celebrated ISIPCA in France. In 1999 he established his own company Histoires de Perfumes.
