Bitter orange & rose sorbet

Bitter Orange

Cedar, Grass, Hay

An Eau de Cologne it’s an Eau de Cologne, right? But even in the realm of classical structures there’s still room for unexpected innovations or at least unexpected twists and details.

The variations on the perennial Eau de Cologne theme are endless and each with its own charm, but you can count on Jean Claude Ellena to create some of the most striking and memorable ones in the genre. He’s the master of naturalistic freshness and he certainly delivers the goods in “Cologne Bigarade”. The perfumer uses a special molecular distillate of bigarade, which emphasises that enlivening bitterness, easy to notice every time you dig your nails in the thick peel of any citrus fruit, releasing a fine mist of essential oils. He balances the invigorating orange zest and blossoms dance with a mellow rose, delicately sweet and a mossy, earthy warmth in the base. It is this dry, grassy coziness which suffuses the whole scent with a softly rounded aura, like gentle autumnal sunshine, that makes “Cologne Bigarade” an unexpected sultry scent.

Both refreshing and sensual, “Cologne Bigarade” is liquidised light bottled and an antidote to short, cold winter evenings. It’s a simple pleasure too and because of this, probably all the more precious.

Frédéric Malle introduced the Editions de Parfums in 2000, as a completely original concept whereby the world’s greatest noses composed exclusive, creative fragrances that would be sold under their creator’s names. In an era in which most companies attach more importance to brand names, by intensified marketing campaigns, Malle brings the attention back to the product itself: perfume. Through a simple “back to basics” ideology, the Editions de Parfums are challenging all prevailing trends.

The blend of Frédéric Malle’s ideals with the distinct personalities of each perfumer, and the total freedom provided to them by the Editions de Parfums, has created a brand with no defined house style. Its singularity comes from its striking heterogeneity, where each nose has expressed and unleashed his or her creative instinct to the fullest.
