This brooding, slightly dangerous “French Lover” is expecting you in the depths of a dark, humid, dense forest, crushing a cigarete butt under his heel, the smell of pine trees, cracked juniper berries and wet earth rising around the two of you like a rugged, mysterious olfactory incantation.

You’re being looked at through black, heavy eyelashes and with a serious expression.  We’re not talking about a lighthearted tryst, but about a desire so intense and sharp that it almost feels like pain.

The vegetal animalism in “French Lover” is something to behold: an intense, bitter green flame that burns and cools at the same time. Galbanum, with its piercing verdancy and resinous tones, is masterfully emphasised by perfumer Pierre Bourdon with the help of spices, cedarwood, vetiver and incense, each taking turns in magnifying the piercing beauty of this raw material. The fragrance ends on a vaguely sour-salty-musky tone all the while retaining the mesmerising foresty vibe. It smels like skin rolled around in pine needles, musty earth and wood shavings.

This is the scent of pure surrender: erotic and that little bit frightening. It’s never easy to lose body, soul and heart to the searing touch of true desire.

Frédéric Malle introduced the Editions de Parfums in 2000, as a completely original concept whereby the world’s greatest noses composed exclusive, creative fragrances that would be sold under their creator’s names. In an era in which most companies attach more importance to brand names, by intensified marketing campaigns, Malle brings the attention back to the product itself: perfume. Through a simple “back to basics” ideology, the Editions de Parfums are challenging all prevailing trends.

The blend of Frédéric Malle’s ideals with the distinct personalities of each perfumer, and the total freedom provided to them by the Editions de Parfums, has created a brand with no defined house style. Its singularity comes from its striking heterogeneity, where each nose has expressed and unleashed his or her creative instinct to the fullest.
