PORTRAIT OF A LADY
Turkish Rose Essence, Raspberry, Blackcurrant
Cinnamon, Clove, Rose Absolute
Patchouli, Sandalwood, Incense, Ambroxan, White Musks
No wonder this is the jewel in the Éditions de Parfums crown: such an intricate, rich, sumptuous and sensual composition couldn’t go unnoticed by perfume lovers worldwide. Alongside “Une Fleur de Cassie”, “Portrait of a lady” is another stupendous proof that Dominique Ropion is one of the greatest master perfumers of our time.
Despite the brand’s insistence that “Portrait of a lady” hasn’t been inspired by Henry James’ eponymous book, we can’t help noticing what a perfect fit this would be for Isabelle Archer’s character, a complex, passionate woman with a cool, elegant allure underneath which a torrent of emotions and longing runs wild. So alike this perfume that blends flawlessly icy and hot elements, darkness and light into an almost baroque structure of great beauty and fascinating details. The idea of a juxtaposing the deep velvety sweetness of the rose against earthy patchouli and creamy woods is not novel, but “Portrait of a lady” is head and shoulders above most of the other variations on the same theme, and its bewitching charm lies in impeccable dosage and balance. That and the best possible raw materials which combine the sturdy radiance of good aromachemicals with the lushness of some of the most expensive natural absolutes available.
Wearing “Portrait of a lady” is like being swept into an engrossing story, with layers upon layers of intrigue and nuances: from the dangerously spicy overture through the juicy, tart almost citric fruitiness, all the way down through the impossibly lavish rose heart wrapped in chocolate patchouli, and the unrivalled sensuousness of the drydown which blooms on the skin like a soft incense, milky sandalwood and exotic amber flower.
You probably can tell: we’re in love.
Frédéric Malle introduced the Editions de Parfums in 2000, as a completely original concept whereby the world’s greatest noses composed exclusive, creative fragrances that would be sold under their creator’s names. In an era in which most companies attach more importance to brand names, by intensified marketing campaigns, Malle brings the attention back to the product itself: perfume. Through a simple “back to basics” ideology, the Editions de Parfums are challenging all prevailing trends.
The blend of Frédéric Malle’s ideals with the distinct personalities of each perfumer, and the total freedom provided to them by the Editions de Parfums, has created a brand with no defined house style. Its singularity comes from its striking heterogeneity, where each nose has expressed and unleashed his or her creative instinct to the fullest.
