She Was An Anomaly
Orris, White Flowers
Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Leather, Musk, Vanilla
« My mother, she was an anomaly, she was brilliant, she was loved but she paid a huge price. » from an Interview with Lisa Simone, in What Happened Miss Simone ?
« I’m sorry, Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that. I am putting myself to the fullest possible use, it can only be attributable to human error. This conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye. » HAL 9000 iconic quote in 2001 : A Space Odyssey.
These remarks could summarize our new perfume, a marriage of Nina Simone and Stanley Kubrick. This fragrance is dedicated to them, to celebrate their talents, their deviations from the norm, from the theoretical value, from the expected. This disparity comes with an excess, from a « computer malfunction », forcing the dose on the iris and musk, and this sublime jeopardy has sprung up to become a perfume, carved by Daniela Andrier. A singularity. A difference. This perfume was necessary.
ETIENNE DE SWARDT
Etat Libre d’Orange (“Free State of Orange”) is a French perfume house founded by Etienne de Swardt in 2006. With a motto of Le parfum est mort, vive le parfum! (Perfume is dead, long live perfume!), the house has quickly established a reputation for its daring and unusual compositions with controversial names and images.
Citing the year of their foundation as “Year Zero of perfumery”, Etat Libre d’Orange drafted a company “Declaration of Independence”, with six articles that outline the company’s creative approach, commitment to high-quality materials, simplicity in packaging and subversiveness of concept. The fragrances are genderless and were initially packaged in identical bottles bearing the company name and logo, though fragrances with distinct packaging began appearing in 2007 with Tom of Finland. The company has partnered with a number of celebrities, including Rossy de Palma, Tilda Swinton and the Sex Pistols to produce special edition scents, and has commemorated Tom of Finland and Josephine Baker with fragrances as well.
